Neptune Oysters
These were some of freshest and tastiest oysters I've had. I quite enjoyed this fresh start to my Boston eats. West coast oysters are always the winner.

Masraff's
Masraff is a seafood centric eatery in Houston. It's pretty nice and reminds me of a high end steak house like Mastro's. Dark walls and furnishings, soft lighting, waiters fully suited up, white linens, heavy leather bound menu, large wine list. This is not your every day meal but for The Annoyer and I, we made it our Monday night dinner.
Garlic Seared Calamari oyster mushroom, shaved onion, cilantro, soy reduction
The calamari was very tender and the sauce was tasty. I didn't quite like how the calamari was lightly floured and pan fried and then sauced. It kinda ended up a mushy exterior. Overall, a good dish but not quite refined.
The foie was seared nicely. The brioche toast was a bit too thin for that hunk of fat and soaked through pretty quickly. The pear and red wine reduction were necessary to cut through the richness. Not the best seared foie gras but not bad.

Coltivare
I was expecting more kale than squash, but was pleased by the interesting preparation of squash. I've never had pickled squash. It was crunchy, and a little bit sweet and sour. The cheese, pecans, and pears really rounded out the picklyness which got a bit tiresome after awhile. More kale probably would have offset the picklyness too.

Oxheart
I think Houston sort of tries to elevate its own dining scene. There's obviously no shortage of money here, but I guess sophisticated food doesn't always follow the money. Oxheart is Houston's attempt at something a little more special. It's supposed to be one of Houston's best new restaurants. I was excited to try out their tasting menu.
Mung Bean Crepe braised mustard greens, potato skins, miso, pickled long beans and fenugreek
The crepe was delicate and crispy. It reminded me of the pancakes you get at Korean restaurants. The filling of braised mustard greens was savory and not too bitter. The side of pickled long beans and fenugreek added some tart crunch. Overall, a nice dish but not something worthy of its place in a $75 tasting menu.

Yelp
For our last meal in Austin, we wanted to brunch it up at Barley Swine's sister restaurant. My bad for actually missing brunch time, so we settled for lunch. Mama H.o.P., Smooth Obturator, and The Annoyer made for a perfect party of 4. I prefer to dine in groups of 4-6 because you can try more things that way and variety is my favorite aspect in dining.
This was a VERY strong start. In fact, this might have been my favorite dish of the meal. They REALLY make excellent bread here. It was so soft and fresh, very reminiscent of the pig bun from the previous night.
The filling was a very delectable porky goodness. The fattiness was tempered by the perfect pairing with mustard. Yums for sure!

Barley Swine
The soup was silky and luscious. It was sweet and complemented by a caramelized onion marmalade. The pecan miso was nutty and unique. The pancetta brought the needed saltiness. The shredded orange thing was some crunchy butternut squash for added texture. Well done!

Caracol

Yelp
I was thoroughly impressed with Hugo's simple, yet refined Mexican cuisine. The food was so well executed and nothing too over the top. I don't think Houstonians or even Texans would fare well with anything that was in the style of Alinea or Eleven Madison Park. Maybe I'm being unfairly simplistic in my view of Texans, but I think its fair to say BBQ, tacos, and kolaches reigns supreme there. I am glad there are places like Hugo's and Caracol to brighten up the scene a bit. Both restaurants are from the same chef/owner Hugo Ortega. Caracol serves up Mexican coastal cuisine that is very seafood centric. Who does not like seafood? If you don't we cannot be friends. Once upon a time, I went on a date with a guy who had a shellfish allergy. I knew it was never meant to be.
Ceviche de Caracol conch, pineapple, ginger, red jalapeno
It's not often you seen conch on a menu stateside. It was everywhere in the Bahamas. The conch itself was nice, but I found the seasoning of this dish to be too sweet. I guess what was I expecting with pineapples right? I like my ceviches to be acidic. The Annoyer liked this one a lot.

Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar
I am always a little hesitant to order cooked oysters. I figure that only the least fresh and least desirable oysters are left to be cooked, while the best are eaten fresh and raw.
To my surprised, these were actually really tasty. The herbs and lemon added the brightness you normally expect when indulging in these oceanic delights.

Mala Sichuan Bistro
BHD doesn't really like spicy food. What a wuss! Just kidding. No, not really. Well, ok he has bad reflux so spicy foods really exacerbates that sometimes. Alright, I'll give him a free pass for health reasons. Maybe he'll do something else one of these days that warrants him a one way ticket to Pansyland. In any case, he did oblige me by taking me out to the well regarded Szechuan restaurant in Houston, Mala. It's even on the Eater's Essential 38 Houston restaurants. This isn't the kind of place you go solo or even in pairs. You need an army to tackle this place because the portions are family style. We came with 2 other friends, so we did our best with 4 people. It turns out our 2 friends don't eat pork! I totally was anticipating this, but BHD was like "Naaahhhh." So we had lots of left overs at the end.
Red Oil Wontons red chili oil, ground garlic, sweet and spicy soy paste, sesame, green onions
I'm not sure why this dish was so popular. The sauce and spice were tasty, but the actual wonton itself was mediocre. I think I could probably whip together a better wonton. They might even have better wontons in your local frozen aisle.
Dan Dan Noodle mala spicy sauce, sesame paste, boiled spinach, yibin preserved vegetables, spiced ground pork, green onions
This was pretty tasty with just the right amount of salt, sweet, spice, all balanced out by the chewy noodles swathed in delicious oil. This and 2 other dishes would be sufficient for just 2 people.

Yu Chun Bunsik
I wasn't much of a foodie back in college. Probably because any meal over $10 was kind of a lot of money back then. I didn't really seek out the best of the best as I do now. I think I was just discovering different kinds of cuisines and building my own palate. One cuisine that was really new to me back then was Korean food. My mom does not like spicy food and my dad disliked the "strange" flavors of Korean food. Thus, it wasn't until I struck out on my own as a college kid and/or dated a Korean guy that I discovered what Korean food was really about. It probably also helped living next to the biggest and best destination for Korean food outside of Korea, LA's very own Koreatown. One of my very favorite Korean dishes is naengmyun, cold spicy noodles. The best naengmyun can be found at Yu Chun Chic Naengmyun. Nowhere else are the noodles as chewy, the sauce as perfectly balanced between salty, sweet, tangy, funky, and the pickled accoutrements as flavorful and crunchy. My favorite part might actually be the icy chilled broth. So I was literally over the moon when I heard there was an outpost opened in Garden Grove. LoMa Linda and Big Head Talks-A-Lot are also Yu Chun fans so were happy to come along.

The Playground
Jungle Fever has been fighting the good fight against the most unfortunate of things...cancer. It super sucks of course, but he has been exuding a positive attitude and living life to the fullest these days. A full life for anyone who is really living, of course, involves eating well. Before his taste buds went all awry from chemotherapy, he planned a lovely dinner to celebrate a fun tennis season together. We went family style at The Playground for their weekly "Sunday Supper." The "Sunday Supper" at The Playground is an awesome deal. For $55 (inclusive of tax and tip), you get 13 (14 if you include the cornbread) courses of anything goes food. By the end of the night you're totally stuffed with food you're not gonna find anywhere else. They're constantly pushing the boundaries here. The Playground is definitely my top recommendation for any OC visitor. Of course our team captain, Mama-Cracks-That-Whip, and Potty Pie were in attendance, as well as some others who will probably never make another appearance on this blog, so my laziness is trumping my creative nicknaming at the moment.
Mixed green salad? Really? Well it was a tasty one, with lots of different textures, which I always appreciate. It was surprisingly VERY spicy. Never had a mixed green salad so spicy.

Sushi Zo
Standard fare.
This was our first taste of Zo's homemade ponzu which I liked at first. BHD was a big fan of it, but after a while I found it a tad too sweet for my liking. The oyster was lovely.

Frances
I was about ready to burst with my last and final meal for my SF summer trip. Luckily, I pulled through and did not disappoint my fellow dining companions Triple F and Running Man, nor my dedicated readers/followers. I always take one for the team. After Lazy Bear, Frances was my next favorite spot during the weekend trip. The food was simple but perfectly imagined and executed. Everything about this place is what is right about the San Francisco dining scene. Seasonal. Farm to table. No fuss.

Hog Island Oyster Co.
1 Ferry Building, Shop 11
San Francisco, CA 94111
hogislandoysters.com
Yelp
The eat-a-thon continues with lunch at one of my favorite spots in San Francisco, The Ferry Building. I love coming here on the Saturdays when the farmer's market is really bumpin'. I usually get filled up by all the eats from the food stalls and fruit vendors before I've even set foot in the building. So I've actually never had a sit down meal at any of the restaurants at the Ferry Building. I was looking forward to lunch with Panda Bear and Mani Bear at Hog Island for some oysters.
The salad definitely had a lot of texture from the radicchio which was a nice change from lettuce or spinach. It leaned a little bitter as a result. The dressing was light, maybe too light. The pine nuts added some more crunch. The figs were not very plentiful.

Lazy Bear
Lazy Bear
3416 19th St
San Francisco, CA 94110
lazybearsf.com
Yelp
There are very few times I hand over the reigns to food planning. Most people are not interested in dedicating the time to figure out what's good to eat. Triple F is not that person. She keeps her ear to the ground. She subscribes to foodie newsletters just like I do. She has been tracking Lazy Bear since its days as a pop-up. They are now so successful and popular, that a ticket, at their now brick and mortar establishment, can be pretty hard to come by. It's no exaggeration that this place is $$$$, but it was well worth it. BEST MEAL OF 2015!
The set up is interesting. They have 2 seatings for the night. You arrive for your dinner service and pass the time upstairs noshing on little bites and sipping on drinks/cocktails, while overlooking the dining room below. It's like a pre dinner cocktail hour. The punch we were served wasn't terribly memorable. It was light on the alcohol. The little appetizers were a great way to start.

Mr. Holmes Bakehouse

San Francisco, CA 94109

Yelp
Being a true hardcore foodie entails dedication. That could play out in any number of ways. Trekking hundreds of miles for food. Standing in long lines for food. Waking up really early for food. Basically, doing something that most people probably wouldn't be willing to do, just to eat something delicious, earns you the foodie badge of commitment in my book. The friends I can deeply relate to on a food level will all go to the same great lengths as I would to satisfy the fat kid that lives within us all. Fishing Zebra Man is such a friend. He has been talking about the signature cruffin and California croissants from Mr. Holmes for some time now, but I was not looking forward to the early morning wait and long line.

SPQR
Totoraku
10610 Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90064
Yelp
I previously blogged about Totoraku, or what I referred to as the "secret beef restaurant." Well if you look on Yelp, Totoraku isn't much of a secret to the 209 Yelpers who posted the mostly 5 star reviews. But the policy still remains. You cannot eat here unless you are one of Oyama-san's "regular customers." I've been here now 4 times, so I think that qualifies me as "regular" enough. Honestly, each time hasn't always been worth the $$$$. Smooth Obturator, who was my original "in" to Totoraku, says Oyama-san just "phones it in" sometimes. So I was pleased to bring Fishing Zebra Man here, and have one of my best experiences. I must say that this time was just as good as the first time, if not better.

Yelp
Our next meal was supposed to be something fancy schmancy. BHD must think that's all I like to eat. In fact, most people think that's all I like to eat. I'm a food blogger, not a strictly 3 star Michelin eater. Yes, I blog about the finer foods in life, but really I will blog about anything delicious and/or special. It just so happens that most food that is delicious and special is $$$$$. Anyways, I said let's forget about another couple hundred dollar meal and just eat something good. Hugo's is such a place. BHD takes the out of towners here too.

Killen's BBQ
3613 E. Broadway
Pearland, TX 77581
killensbarbeque.com
Yelp
When in Rome, do as the Romans. In Houston, they stand in long lines under the punishing sun, enveloped in the sweltering heat, with a beer in one hand, all for the promise of Killen's BBQ. Texas is all about the BBQ. This line was no joke. We got there at 10:30? or maybe later and the line was at least 50 if not 100 people deep. That's not counting the people hanging out in the shade while the kinder souls in the party stood in line. Notice where I'm taking this picture from??? Bair Hugger Deluxe is such a soul. He shooed off JW and I to get some free icy cold beer for her, and water for me, while we waited in the shade. Once the place opened up at 11, it started moving along. We probably sat down to eat around 12-12:30?
