Bruxie

People are getting pretty creative with waffles these days.  Gone are the days of waffles with a drizzle of Aunt Jemima.   Bruxie in OC is one of these places reimagining this classic breakfast food into something the savory or sweet to be had at any time of the day.  The Germaphobe suggested Bruxie for lunch during our weekend-long celebration of April birthdays for The Mom and me.  It would be hard to follow up the previous night's dinner at Gjelina (no post because the lighting was terrible but the food was amazing!).   We were worried the line would be around the block for this not-quite-a-restaurant-or-food-truck/cart outpost.  It's an order-and-call-your-name place with a smattering of outdoor seating.  It was perfect for a casual lunch on a hot and sunny Sunday.

Roasted Mushroom & Goat Cheese fresh basil, arugula, balsamic reduction
HemaSh, being a vegetarian, is quite limited when she dines out.  Fortunately, Bruxie had some meat- free offerings.  The Germaphobe went 50/50 with her, as she commonly does.  They seemed to like their 2 waffle sandwiches.

Club avocado, tomato, gruyere, pesto aioli
I actually think this was supposed to be a "turkey club" that had bacon, but HemaSh and The Germaphobe must have gotten it sans.

Bruxie Hash & Eggs prosciutto, pastrami hash, fried egg
The Mom and Dubabo both got this one and seemed to like it, although one of them did comment on the heaviness of it.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken & Waffle chili honey, cider slaw
There were so many tasty offerings to choose from, but I had to go with their famous chicken and waffle sandwich.  I'm not a particular fan of this duo since first trying it Roscoe's in LA, which turned out to be some soggy waffles and dry ass chicken.  To me it always seemed like such a strange pairing and Roscoe's did nothing to change that.  Bruxie did a good job bringing me closer to the chicken & waffles fan club.  The chicken was moist, crispy on the outside, with a nice drizzle of sweet honey.  The waffle was crispy and light.  The cider slow added another dimension of texture and sweetness with just a hint of tang.  Overall, it was surprisingly good.

Liege Waffle caramelized pearl sugar
I think I like this denser type of waffle.  The version at Bruxie fell a bit short, mostly because of the pearl sugar wasn't well caramelized.  It was spattered chunks that were very obvious and distracting.  You can even see them in the picture.

Lemon Cream & Berries
If you're a fan of lemon, then this is a must for you.  It was sweet, tart, fruity, creamy and delicious.

Bruxie was surprisingly solid.  They really are trying to do something special here and I believe they are succeeding.  I'd definitely come back for lunch or even just dessert.  It's casual, easy, simple, but a little bit different.  Maybe I'd be singing a different tune if I had to wait in some ridiculous line, I couldn't find a place to sit, or I only had the liege waffle to end my meal.  Thanks to The Germaphobe for bringing us here.  It was a great way to end a fun birthday weekend.
