Syrup

The problem I often encounter when I dine with friends, is that people are so full by the end of the meal that nobody wants to get dessert.  Or out of guilt, they don't want to get dessert.  Syrup Desserts has been on my radar since its early opening.  But its location in Downtown and the aforementioned reasons, I didn't get to try it until recently.


The place was pretty packed, but I was able to snag a table.  From my table, I eyed a shiny bright display full of treats.  I knew better than to order anything from this window, since the place is known for their waffle creations.

This looked a lot bigger in person.  The waffles were moist and fluffy on the inside, but crispy on the outside.  The strawberries, bananas, and ice cream made for a classic twist on a normal breakfast treat.  Stick to this if you prefer the predictable.

On the other hand, the caramel apple waffle was an interesting departure from breakfast or dessert.   The main difference was the liege waffle, which is a  is a richer, denser, sweeter, and chewier waffle with chunks of pearl sugar caramelized on the outside.  In addition, this was filled with apple pie filling.  It's hard to judge the integrity of the waffle since it was filled.  Parts of it tasted undercooked, but I could appreciate the different texture from the Belgian waffle.  The ice cream was pretty sweet, but when eaten with the apples, pie filling, and waffle it made for a well balanced treat.



2 dishes for 4 people turned out to be quit a bit of dessert considering we had a mini dessert at dinner with some macarons from Paulette.  We were all busting at the seams.  I'm glad I finally got to try Syrup because it was a nice change of pace for dessert.  I would recommend this place if you're looking for a place to hang out after dinner in Downtown.  They have a large selection of coffee drinks and ice cream creations.  The only downside to the place is that its pretty small and gets easily packed, so be wary on the weekends.
